history
The traditional historiography of Petterweiler assumes that the place was first mentioned in a document in 801: The Lorsch Codex lists a donation from a certain Berenger to the Lorsch Monastery in Phetterenheim for October 20, 801 . In fact, however, Heddernheim , now a district of Frankfurt am Main , also claims this source for itself. Petterweil also appears repeatedly as “Phetruwila” or something similar in the so-called Codex Eberhardi , which, like the Lorsch Codex, dates back to the second half of the 12th century, but goes back to the Carolingian era.
In what form the village came into being is unclear; In Carolingian times it was probably only a few court groups at first. In 1253 an Ober-Petterweil was mentioned that was devastated in the Thirty Years War and not rebuilt. The actual village received its ground plan, which was preserved until the end of the 19th century, probably around 1400.
In the 19th century, Petterweil was a stronghold of the freedom movement. From 1812 the Lutheran pastor and freedom fighter of Vormärz, Heinrich Christian Flick, worked here . In 1848 he organized a public meeting with the MP Robert Blum . Blum, a left-wing politician, gave his last speech here in 1848 before his execution in Vienna . The Robert Blum monument on the outskirts still bears witness to this today.
In the First World War fell 14 Petter Weiler citizens. During the Nazi era , the NSDAP achieved 55.1% of the vote in the 1932 Reichstag elections. In the runoff election for Reich President in 1932 , in which Hindenburg was victorious, Adolf Hitler received 57.7% of the vote in Petterweil. In 1933 the Hitler Youth was founded in Petterweil. In 1942 91 forced laborers had to work in Petterweil. After the war, the village took in 350 refugees of German origin and displaced persons from Eastern Europe.
In the course of administrative reform in Hesse , the community Petterweil were to August 1, 1972 by virtue of state law, with the city Karben together , thereby losing its independence. Mayor of Karben became the then mayor of Petterweil Albert Schäfer. The newly built community center (Albert-Schäfer-Haus) was named after him. The old town hall was converted into a fire station in 1994.
