The Church of St. Martin is the Protestant village church in the Karben district of Petterweil . It was built in the center of the historic town center. The building that exists today dates from 1653.

history

A first chapel was built on this site around the year 800. The patronage of St. Martin of Tours gives reason to assume that the Christians in the area held their services in a wooden church before that . In the possession of the Fulda monastery , it also served as a baptistery for the neighboring towns of Okarben and Kloppenheim and the now defunct Hulshofen in the 9th century . Around 1200/1250 the chapel was replaced by a Romanesque- style building. The arched portal on the west side and the holy water basin that are still preserved today date from this time . With the Reformation the village and with it the church became Protestant. During the Thirty Years War the church was almost completely destroyed.

It was not until 1653 that the residents of Petterweil started to rebuild. In memory of the previous building, it was rebuilt as an elongated hall church . Since then, the church has undergone numerous structural changes. In the 19th century was Gothic roof top by the still existing roof skylights replaced.
