geography

Neighboring areas

At the end of 1973 the district bordered clockwise in the east, beginning with the districts of Kassel , Fritzlar-Homberg and Frankenberg in Hesse and the districts of Brilon , Büren and Warburg in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

On February 1, 1942, the districts of Eder, Eisenberg and Twiste were merged to form the new district of Waldeck with its administrative seat in Korbach. It was named after the former Principality of Waldeck and the Free State of Waldeck, which existed until 1929 . When the province of Hessen-Nassau was divided into the provinces of Nassau and Kurhessen on July 1, 1944 , the Waldeck district became part of Kurhessen. The Waldeck district comprised a total of 113 communities until the first community mergers in 1968.

On December 31, 1970, the district was enlarged by integrating the municipality of Oberwerba from the Frankenberg district into the Ober-Werbe municipality of the Waldeck district. On August 1, the city of Volkmarsen also joined the Waldeck district from the dissolved Wolfhagen district. After a large number of other mergers and new foundations, there were still 21 communities in the Waldeck district at the time of its dissolution on December 31, 1973.

As part of the Hessian district reform , today's Waldeck-Frankenberg district was formed on January 1, 1974 from the largest part of the Waldeck and Frankenberg district and the municipality of Schiffelbach from the Marburg district . Korbach became the district town. The town of Züschen from the Waldeck district was incorporated into the town of Fritzlar in the Schwalm-Eder district . Simultaneously with the dissolution of the Waldeck district, further incorporations took place on January 1, 1974. Ultimately, eleven communities from the Waldeck district joined the new Waldeck-Frankenberg district.
