Eppe is a south-western and rurally structured district of Korbach in the north Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg .
geography
Eppe is located at around 360 m altitude around 2 km east of the Hessian border with North Rhine-Westphalia in the extreme (north) eastern foothills of the Rothaar Mountains around 8 km southwest of the core city of Korbach and around 6 km northeast of the Westphalian city of Medebach . Immediately to the east of the village runs the Wilde Aa ("Aar") in a north-south direction . The Medebacher Bay extends to the south , the Waldecker Land to the east and the Upland a few kilometers to the north .
history
Eppe was first mentioned in a document in 1220. Originally called Hepehe and Epehe , the place was the ancestral seat of the noble family of Eppe, first known with Reinhard von Eppe (1214-1254) . A Heinrich von Eppe (1240–1276) and his brother were Burgmannen in Warburg . In 1289 a Herbold von Eppehe was mayor of the city of Korbach. A Dietrich von Eppe (1332-1374) was bailiff to Fürstenberg , a current district of Lichtenfels .
On July 1, 1970, until then independent municipality under Eppe was municipal reform in Hesse on a voluntary basis in the county seat Korbach incorporated . The district of Eppe had an area of 10.83 km².
religion
With the introduction of the Reformation in the county of Waldeck in 1526/1529, the village population became Protestant and Catholics did not return to the village until the 19th century. Until 1865 the place had a simultaneous church that was used jointly by both denominations. This had to be demolished because of dilapidation. The current Protestant church was built in 1876. The parish belongs to the parish Nieder-Ense.
In 1869 the church of St. Peter and Paul was built for the Catholic community and consecrated on October 4, 1870. This makes it the first new building of a Catholic church in the Waldecker Land after the Reformation. The villages of Nieder-Schleidern and Alleringhausen also belong to the Catholic parish of Eppe . It is assigned to the pastoral association Korbach in the dean's office Waldeck and, although located in northern Hesse, belongs to the Westphalian archbishopric of Paderborn like the entire area of the former district of Waldeck.
Heidenstrasse
The Heidenstraße is a more than 1000 year old military and trade route through the Aartal. It led from Leipzig via Kassel , Korbach, Eppe and Medebach to Cologne and was about 500 km long. Over the centuries not only goods were transported here, it was also used by settlers and pilgrims; also the emperor Otto III. (1000) and Charles IV (1349) are said to have used them. It is also seen as a feeder to the “Jakobspfad”, another pilgrimage and trade route. Traces of this road can still be found today.
Since June 1, 2009 a memorial stone with a plaque commemorates Heidenstrasse. It is the first memorial stone for Heidenstrasse in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district and in Hesse.
