The former smallest town of Waldeck is now part of the Lichtenfels community, which was founded in 1971 .

Geographical location

Fürstenberg is located about 11 km south-southwest of the district town of Korbach . The Edersee is only 4 km away to the east-northeast, its dam is just 16 km to the east (depending on the beeline ). The Heimbach flows west past the village ; near its confluence with the Orke is Reckenberg Castle .

history

Fürstenberg, once the smallest town in Waldeck and Hesse , was first mentioned as a town in 1254. Remains of the old city wall can still be seen in the historic town center.

Hedgehog legend and hedgehog festival

Many old stories and legends entwine around the small town. One of them is the hedgehog legend , after which Fürstenberg was also given the name "Igelstadt". A hedgehog is said to have saved Count Heinrich von Waldeck from falling off a cliff into an abyss because his horse shied away from the hedgehog. For the service that the hedgehog had rendered him, the count granted the town of “Vorsteburg” town rights and a silver goblet that is passed around as a bar at the hedgehog festival. The hedgehog festival is still celebrated in Fürstenberg on the Monday before Pentecost .

Reorganization

On October 1, 1971, Fürstenberg and seven other communities formed the new city of Lichtenfels.
