Orc spring
The Orke entry valley into Örksche Schweiz , partial landscape 332.33 of the eastern Sauerland mountain range , near Dalwigksthal ; above in the background Lichtenfels Castle

The Orke is an approximately 38.2 km long, western and orographically left tributary of the Eder in the North Rhine-Westphalian Hochsauerlandkreis and in the Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg . With an average water flow of around 4 m³ / s, it is the largest left tributary of the Eder.

course

The Orke rises in the Westphalian Hochsauerlandkreis in the northeast part of the Rothaargebirge . Your in the Natural Park Sauerland Rothaargebirge located source located on the southwestern edge of the Medebacher hamlet Kuestelberg and about 880 meters west of the 791.3  m high Schlossberg summit. The steep valley head of the valley, which initially faces south-west, at about 645  m above sea level. The origin located at the NHN represents the northernmost point of the river. The Orke rises in a small headwaters from the union of several rivulets - located above its Reetsbergsiepen tributary.

In the first few meters, the Orke is crossed by several wooden bridges. Shortly afterwards, the predominantly south-east running river is reinforced by the Reetsbergsiepen, the Kesselsiepen and other channels from species-rich sources. The valley, initially sunk around 200 meters deep, has a stepped longitudinal profile and, together with the side valleys of the Helle and Ehrenscheider Bach descending near Elkeringhausen from Winterberg , a pronounced trough shape. The headwaters of the Ruhr to the northwest, beyond the Rhine-Weser watershed , lie adjacent on the other hand, in hollows with less incline that sweep up the valley as if cut off to the deep Orketal. Then the Orke flows around the striking mountain group of Reetsberg ( 792.2  m ), Rösberg (formerly called Eggekopf ; 781  m ) and Alter Grimme ( 754.9  m ) in a wide curve to the left .

Below the Ehrenscheider Mühle and the former settlement of Wernsdorf , a deserted area designated as a cultural monument , the Orke flows in the Vildischen Grund to the east, between the Alte Grimme in the north and the Hohe Seite ( 752.5  m ) in the south. Between the forester's lodge Kaltenscheid and the Medebach district of Medelon , it leaves the Rothaar Mountains and reaches one of the natural subunits of the Eastern Sauerland mountain range, the Medebach Bay . Here, after flowing through Medelon, three larger tributaries flow from the north: first at the Ober- and Mittelmühle the Gelängebach , then, below the Polter- and Niedermühle , the Medebach coming from Medebach and the Brühne , also called Hagemecke in the upper reaches .

In the meantime, the Orke reaches the northern Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg more smoothly when it leaves the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park . To the east of the village of Münden , a district of Lichtenfels , the Orke flows towards the Schwelgersbach , which comes from the southwest . Then from the Orke an artificially created flood channel about 130 m in length leads over to the Wilde Aa ( Aar ).

Its largest tributary, the Wilde Aa (Aar) , flows in from the northwest between Münden and the Dalwigksthal district of Lichtenfels , where the Orke canalised for around 150 m along state road  3076 (Orketalstraße) . In from tortuous here valley portion is located on a south of the river valley lying spur the Burg Lichtenfels , the Orke enters her gorge cut by the Örkschen Switzerland (Waldeckische Switzerland), in which, a few kilometers downstream in the valley, the Reckenberg Castle is located. After the confluence of the Heimbach coming from the north in the direction of Fürstenberg (to Lichtenfels), the valley floor, lined with steep, beech-lined slopes, opens somewhat to the exit from Switzerland and gives space to the Vöhler districts of Nieder- and Oberorke .

A little further south-east, the Orke flows into the Eder, coming from the south-south-west, at Ederbringhausen (to Vöhl) after crossing under the Warburg – Sarnau railway line at a height of about 256  m . To the east of the estuary, which corresponds to the southernmost point of the river, and thus beyond the Eder, are the ruins of the Keseburg .

Traffic and walking

The upper reaches of the Orke are accompanied by Kreisstraße  50, which runs from the Winterberg core town through Elkeringhausen to Landesstraße  740 leading to Küstelberg . By between age Grimme and High side opposite to the valley portion Vildischen ground leads between the K 50 in Elkeringhausen and (NRW) L 617 ( Hesborn - Medelon - Medebach ) at Medelon a guideway . From now on she will be accompanied by the L 617 to and through Medelon. From the Ober- and Mittelmühle, the Orke follows the L 858, which first merges into the L 740 and then, across the border, into the (Hessian) L 617 ( Münden - Dalwigksthal ). Between Dalwigksthal, where the L 3076 ( Rhadern −Dalwigksthal− Sachsenberg ) crosses, and Niederorke , where the L 3084 (Sachsenberg − Niederorke− Buchenberg ) crosses, the lower course is accompanied by a road. From Niederorke, the K 85 leads to the Ederbringhausen estuary along the Orke. A few meters above the confluence with the Eder, the Orke passes under the Warburg – Sarnau railway line .

In Elkeringhausen and near the Wernsdorf settlement , the Orke is crossed by the Winterberger Hochtour , a hiking trail that connects the districts, mountains and valleys of Winterberg. The 9.5 km long nature trail Orke Water Path leads along a section of the river near Medelon , on which you can learn interesting facts about the habitat of rivers and floodplains at 13 stations with display boards .
