The Helle is an approximately 3.7 km long, western and orographically right tributary of the Orke in the northeast part of the Rothaargebirge in North Rhine-Westphalia ( Germany ).
course
The light rises west of the center of the Winterberg core town. Its source is in a residential area between the Herrloh Tunnel in the west-southwest and a small park in the east-northeast to the west of Winterberg's old town.
The light flows - in Winterberg partly underground - shortly after its source through the aforementioned park, in which there is a small pond. Then it passes - after crossing under the federal highway 236 - the old town to the north and then runs through the park In der Helle with the nature reserve Schluchtwald Helle . There it takes on the left side of the Großer Siepen coming from a ravine valley , which pours into the Helletal in many small waterfalls. From then on, it flows within the nature reserve in an easterly direction through the steep Helletal , where it is dammed up to form the small, approximately 290 meter long and up to 50 m wide Lake Constance . A little below Lake Constance, a small tributary joins on the right. Shortly afterwards it leaves the forest area and runs through an open meadow valley.
Finally , a few hundred meters after another tributary on the left , the Helle flows into the Eder tributary Orke coming from Elkeringhausen just above a sewage treatment plant .
Catchment area and tributaries
The catchment area of the Helle is 3.891 km². It has several small tributaries, but except for the tributary Großer Siepen , which comes from a ravine valley , they are nameless and mostly only carry water during the snowmelt or after heavy rainfall.
useful information
Until the St. Franziskus Hospital was built in 1888, the light rises south of the old town on Kreuzberg. However, it was then partly conducted underground past the old town. In some houses there are still wells that collect the water.
Watershed
The source area of the Helle is located on the Rhine-Weser watershed : While the water of the Helle flows over the Orke in a south-easterly direction into the Eder and Fulda to the Weser , the water, which rises about 800 m further to the west, strives over the Nameless , negro and dysentery in the Rhine .
Nature, the environment, fauna
The still open course of the Helle lies in the 58 hectare nature reserve "Schluchtwald Helle". The entire nature reserve is also part of the FFH area “Schluchtwald Helle bei Winterberg”, which is identical in its delimitation and in which many rare plants and animals on the Red List occur. The forest stands are grove-beech forest, silver-leaf maple canyon forest and slope debris forest. In the forest there are rock cliffs several meters high, and there a multitude of springs and rivulets ensure a rich structure. There are extensive wet and wet meadows in the nature reserve . In the meantime, the North Rhine-Westphalia Foundation and the State of North Rhine-Westphalia have purchased larger areas in the nature reserve at the request of the Association for Nature and Bird Protection in the Hochsauerlandkreis . The areas of the foundation and the state are extensively cultivated according to the specifications of the culture-landscape-maintenance program of the Hochsauerlandkreis.
Several species of woodpecker, including the gray woodpecker, can be found in the forests of the NSG . The dipper can be found by the stream . The black stork , which breeds in the forests of the Glindfeld Forest to the southeast, is a frequent source of food by the stream. The species common snipe , whinchat and meadow pipit , which existed until the early 1990s , have become extinct in the nature reserve.
hike
The light, which is partially underground and canalised in Winterberg, is crossed once from the Rothaarsteig between the streets Im Hohlen Seifen and Bahnhofstraße near the city center . Below the village leads through parts of the Helletal the 4.1 km long gorge and bridge path , which crosses the Helle and its tributaries on 11 bridges and also runs around Lake Constance .
