Elkeringhausen is a district of the city of Winterberg in the North Rhine-Westphalian Hochsauerlandkreis .

Geographical location

Elkeringhausen is located in the north-eastern part of the Rothaargebirge in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park, about 3 km northeast of the core town of Winterberg. It is located in an almost round valley at an altitude of about 485 to 543  m between the Böhl ( 721.4  m ) in the north, the Rösberg ( 785.7  m ) in the east, the Alte Grimme ( 754.9  m ) in the southeast, the Kreuzberg ( 715.5  m ) in the southwest and the Ruhrkopf ( 695.7  m ) in the northwest. The Orke flows through the village in the Orketal , which flows a little south of the village after the confluence of the Helle past the Ehrenscheider Mühle and among other things runs through the nearby Medelon to the Eder .

history

The place is mentioned for the first time in a document from 1395, when Broseke von Viermünden bought this Cologne fief from Gerlach von Diedenshausen . For a long time the noblemen von Büren owned property in the place. In this context there is talk of a Sunder at Elkeringhausen in 1410. Around 1530 the place was temporarily deserted and it does not appear in the tax register of 1536. As can be seen from later property registers, the inhabitants had moved to Winterberg and retained the use of their fields. The village was repopulated over the next few decades.

In 1548 "Elckerckhausen" was referred to as a village which, together with Dreislar and Braunshausen, had to serve the Medebach bailiff Hermann von Viermünden. At that time it belonged to the Medebach office .

For a long time Elkeringhausen was a branch of the Grönebach parish without its own church. A chapel is mentioned for the first time in 1801. In 1863 a new chapel was built and consecrated to St. Mary Magdalene. In 1909 Elkeringhausen became a branch church of Grönebach and in 1960 an independent parish.

In 1563 Elkeringhausen consisted of 6 taxable house locations. In addition, the parish of Grönebach owned the so-called Lambertusgut in the village. These seven goods can still be seen in a list by Mark Elkeringhausen from 1715. The owners were partly citizens of Winterberg, partly residents of Elkeringhausen.

The Medebach bailiff was able to buy the Lambertusgut in 1552. He then built his house around 1560 and took up residence there. Since 1572 at the latest, there have been repeated disputes between the two parties about land use in and around Elkeringhausen. In 1592 there is talk of "Haus Elkeringhausen", where the bailiff Arnold von Viermünden died. As a Lutheran, he was buried in Nieder-Ense in Waldeck . Around 1642 the house was empty. In 1688 the Mayor of Winterberg Jacob Mörchen leased the noble house and estate Elkeringhausen, which at that time was owned by the noble family von Bourscheid zu Nordenbeck in the Principality of Waldeck. In 1718, the three Winterberg residents Heinrich Mörchen, Heinrich Schmidt and Lorenz Deimel agreed on the use of the Elkeringhausen house. Mayor Lorenz Deimel had the noble house, which was useless for the city, demolished around 1734. The administrator of Haus Nordenbeck complained about this to the Elector of Cologne. Apparently this had no consequences, at least the mayor Deimel remained in undisturbed possession of the noble estate. This is evidenced by a tithe register he started in 1735, which contains entries on lease income for the entire 18th century.

In 1802 the place fell with the Duchy of Westphalia to the Landgraviate of Hessen-Darmstadt . From 1816 Elkeringhausen belonged to Prussia. First it was assigned to the Medebach district , then to the Brilon district . From 1826 it was part of the Winterberg mayor's office and from 1837 part of the Niedersfeld office .

In 1864 the place had 222 inhabitants.

At the beginning of 1945, the Second World War began to have an increasing impact on the village. The number of evacuees, refugees and foreign workers was already greater than that of the locals at this time. There was neither enough food nor enough shelter, so a lot had to live in the woods. On March 27, stage troops of the Wehrmacht marched through the town, followed by remnants of combat troops on March 28. These took their quarters in the elementary school. On March 29, the Volkssturm was called to defend the village . On March 30, however, German combat units marched through the village towards Küstelberg. On Easter Sunday, April 1st, a German gun battery fired from the village in the same direction. Whenever possible, the population fled with carts and handcarts into the forests on Reetsberg. At this time, fighting was already taking place at the nearby Ehrenscheider mill. On the evening of April 2, US troops entered the town and occupied it. Germans captured in the forests of Hamm were brought to the village on April 4. Towards evening the US troops moved on towards Grönebach. A crew remained in the village and imposed a curfew from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Two days later the fighting in the village ended. On April 8th, a fallen Wehrmacht soldier was found and buried in the cemetery. The last of the US soldiers left on April 30th. In the period that followed, there were attacks by former foreign workers. About a month later, the first evacuees returned to their cities. In the Second World War , 43 men from Elkeringhausen died as soldiers, most of them on the Eastern Front , or were missing. One of them died while escaping from captivity. In addition, four civilians were killed in acts of war.

In 1961 Elkeringhausen had 202 inhabitants with an area of 5.8 km². 191 of them were Catholic and 8 Protestant. Of the labor force, 32.5% were employed in agriculture and forestry, 24.6% in manufacturing and the remainder in other professions.

On January 1, 1975, the municipality Elkeringhausen became part of the town of Winterberg as part of the municipal reorganization .
