panorama

It borders in the north on Niedersfeld and Hildfeld , in the south on Elkeringhausen . The highest point in Grönebach is 825 m high. Grönebach is the closest place to the Ruhr spring .

history

Grönebach was first mentioned in a document in 1250. The church patron, St. Lambertus , as well as the well-preserved defense tower of St. Lambertus Church in Romanesque style, which is also the oldest building in the city of Winterberg, suggest that it is older. Up until the establishment of the Niedersfeld office, Grönebach was the main town of the free county of the same name, which also included the villages of Hildfeld , Niedersfeld and Siedlinghausen and which the lords of Gaugreben had as a fiefdom from the Landgrave of Hesse. Since 1904 Grönebach had together with Hildfeld a station of the Kleinbahn Steinhelle-Medebach , whose rail traffic was stopped again in 1953.

On March 31, 1945, combat troops from the 3rd Panzer Grenadier Division under the command of Lieutenant General Walter Denkert appeared in Grönebach. On April 2, the staff and combat troops of the 176th Infantry Division under the command of Major General Christian-Johannes Landau followed . The 176th Infantry Division lacked horse-drawn vehicles, so they even used handcarts. On March 3, guns from Grönebach began to fire at positions of the US troops. The US artillery then fired at Grönebach all day and night. One soldier was killed and four houses were badly damaged. The German guns were moved back to Niedersfeld on the night of April 3rd. On April 4, US troops began to advance into the village. Two US tanks were set on fire. The German associations fled the village at noon. The US troops began a massive attack on the place, as they had not noticed the escape of the German troops. 13 houses were set on fire and two civilians were killed. When the residents were able to leave their cellars after taking the village, they found that every building had suffered major damage from the shelling. 36 cattle and two horses were killed or had to be emergency slaughtered. Heavy US artillery was deployed in the village on April 5th and fired west and northwest from April 6th to 8th. On April 8, the bulk of US troops moved on.

In the Second World War , 54 Grönebachers fell as soldiers, most of them on the Eastern Front , or died in captivity.

On January 1, 1975, Grönebach was incorporated into the town of Winterberg.

In 1989 and 1993 Grönebach was awarded the state's bronze medal in the competition Our village should be more beautiful . In 2000, Grönebach celebrated its 750th anniversary.
