Geographical location

The first part of the place name should be derived from the Old High German "Hille-a" (= mountain slope water). The "field on the mountain slope" also describes the exact geographical location of the place: the summit of the Clemensberg , at about 837  m above sea level. NHN, the third highest mountain in North Rhine-Westphalia, lies on Hildfeld area; the place is on its slope. The Hoppecke spring rises on the northeast flank of the Clemensberg in the Neuer Hagen nature reserve . The Rhine-Weser watershed runs through Hildfeld . While the water of the Hillebach , which passes south of the village , reaches the Rhine through the Ruhr , the Hoppecke flows into the Diemel and thus reaches the Weser .

history

The place Hildfeld is the oldest documented part of the Winterberg urban area: On July 9th, 1220 the nobles Berthold and Thietmar von Büren donated the estate "Hiltvelde" to the monastery in the neighboring Küstelberg - this process was documented. In a description of the Medebach office from 1548, Hildfeld is named fourth with the villages of Grönebach , Siedlinghausen and Niedersfeld as belonging to the county of Grönebach. At that time the lords of Gaugreben had this county as a fief from the Landgrave of Hesse. In the 18th century the village had twelve farms. The oldest surviving houses date from this period.

From the winter of 1944, Allied aircraft constantly flew over Hildfeld. Bombs were dropped, presumably false or emergency drops of damaged aircraft, on the forest areas around the village. In the event of an air-raid alarm, tunnels in the ground or at Pölz were visited. On the evening of March 30th, a group of Volkssturm from Soest reached the village to make quarters. The next day Wehrmacht combat troops were quartered. On April 1st, the Volkssturm and the Wehrmacht marched southeast towards the US troops. From April 3, German guns fired from the village at the US troops. The US troops shot back massively. Four soldiers and two women were killed and others injured. On April 4, the US troops attacked after another heavy fire. The first attack failed, and the commander was badly wounded. The village was captured in the second attack. Now German artillery shot at Hildfeld. The US combat troops moved on on April 5th. From April 5th to 7th, US guns fired at the area of Bödefeld and Fredeburg from the village area. After the end of the fight, numerous buildings in the village were destroyed or damaged. The killed German soldiers were buried in the village cemetery. In the following period there were attacks by Eastern workers. One resident was shot dead by an Eastern worker on October 31. When a bazooka exploded in the mountains on September 25th, a resident was killed.

During the Second World War , 39 Hildfeld soldiers died as soldiers, most of them on the Eastern Front , or died in captivity.

On January 1, 1975, Hildfeld was incorporated into the city of Winterberg. Previously, the place was assigned to the Niedersfeld office.

In 1987 Hildfeld was awarded the state's gold medal in the competition “ Our village should become more beautiful ”.
