The Hoppecke in Hoppecke

The Hoppecke rises near the border of Westphalia with the Hochsauerlandkreis and North Hesse with the Waldeck-Frankenberg district at the junction of the Sauerland and Upland regions . The Hoppecke spring is located in Westphalian territory between Hildfeld in the south-southwest and the Hessian Willingen in the north-northeast and between the Westphalian Clemensberg (approx.  837  m above sea level ) in the southwest and the Hessian Hegekopf ( 842.9  m ) in the north-northeast. It is located in the high heath landscape of the Neuer Hagen nature reserve at an altitude of around 780  m . The Rothaarsteig long-distance hiking trail leads past the hillside debris source . The source is a station on the circular hiking trail The Golden Path , which can be reached as a landscape therapy trail from Niedersfeld .

Initially, the often water-rich Hoppecke, which mostly runs in a north-easterly direction, flows quite steeply downhill after crossing the border with Hesse and then westwards past the center of Willingen to get back to North Rhine-Westphalia just below the town. Then she makes a long right curve along the railway line leading from Willingen via Brilon-Wald , Hoppecke , Messinghausen and Beringhausen to Marsberg ; The northwest section of the Uplandbahn route, which leads from Korbach to Brilon-Wald, also runs through the Hoppecketal. The Hoppecke runs below Willingen in the area of Brilon-Wald, in front of which the Schmalah coming from the southwest joins, first along a section of the federal road 251 , later along the state road  870, which leads on the Diemel from the town of Hoppecke to Bredelar , and finally along a section of federal highway 7 , which leads from Brilon to Marsberg.

A few kilometers further downstream or to the northeast, the Hoppecke flows into the Diemel, which flows from the southwest, on this railway line in an unsettled valley area below the village of Bredelar, where the monastery of the same name is located . Its mouth is about 268  m above sea level, so that there is a total of 512 m difference in altitude.

Watershed

The source area of the Hoppecke is located on the elongated Rhine-Weser watershed : While the Hoppecke, which rises in the Neuer Hagen nature reserve , faces the Weser over the Diemel , the Hillebach , which rises on the southwestern side of the ridge, flows over the Ruhr in the Rhine .

For classification as a tributary

The interesting thing about the Diemel tributary Hoppecke is that it is slightly longer to its confluence (34.7 km compared to 32.4 km) than the Diemel upper reaches there. However, the catchment area of the Hoppecke is significantly smaller than that of the Diemel, already fed by Itter and Rhene , and the flow rate is correspondingly lower.

In contrast to the Eder , which is primarily historically run as a “tributary” of the Fulda , the Hoppecke is a tributary of the Diemel in the true sense of the word, despite its length.

Catchment area and tributaries

The catchment area of the Hoppecke is 92.371 km². To their tributaries include those watercourses indicated respectively - orographic assignment position of the mouth, the length in kilometers (km), the mouth area and the mouth height in meters above mean sea level (MSL); Brooks that flow into the Hoppecke tributaries are shown slightly indented, written in smaller and in italics :
