geography

course

The Schmala has its source in the south of the Bruchhausen district (Hochsauerlandkreis), about 2.6 km west of Willingen, which belongs to Hesse ( Waldeck-Frankenberg district ). The source is located southwest of the 805  m high summit of the Hoppernkopf, only 100 m northwest of the Hessian border at about 750  m above sea level. NHN .

The Schmala flows exclusively in North Rhine-Westphalian territory and in a predominantly northerly direction through an unpopulated, wooded and narrow valley that is framed by these mountains next to the Hoppernkopf in the south: the Schellhorn ridge stretches to the east (hence the brook is also called the Schellhornbach ) with Großem Kluskopf ( 761  m ) and Rehkopf ( 674.7  m ), in the north there is the Ginsterkopf ( 663.3  m ), and in the west the Istenberg ( 728  m ) with the Bruchhauser Steinen and the Hömberg ( 730  m ).

In its valley, the stream flows through the Schmalatalsperre and two ponds (one below the dam and one below the waterworks at the exit of the valley ), which were built to supply the Brilon urban area with drinking water and drinking water .

Then , coming from the southwest, the Schmala joins the B 251 at the junction of the state road L 743, which connects Brilon-Wald in the east with Elleringhausen (eastern district of Olsberg ) in the west, or on the southern outskirts of Brilon-Wald at around 470  m altitude in the Hoppecke coming from the south . Directly opposite the mouth is the St. Josef Monastery .

Rhine-Weser watershed

The aforementioned mountains west of the Schmalatal form a section of the Rhine-Weser watershed : the water of the Schmala flows through Hoppecke and Diemel into the Weser , while the water of the Gierskoppbach, which runs beyond these mountains, flows through the Ruhr into the Rhine .

hike

There are hiking trails along the Schmala and especially over the neighboring mountains , on which you can explore the landscape. A section of the Rothaarsteig, which mostly runs over the main ridge of the Rothaargebirge, leads through the northern and southern valley areas and over the mountains to the west of the stream . On this hiking trail, above the source area of the Schmala and thus south-south-west of the Hoppernkopf summit, there is a place of execution (an old court of the Kurkölner Gogerichts ), which is located directly south-east of the state border in Hessian territory at 762.6  m (instead of 800  m according to the inscription on the bronze plaque) .
