history

When exactly Bruchhausen was first mentioned in a document is controversial, as there are several places with this name in the Sauerland . The Bruchhausen teacher and local historian Josef Wälters came to the conclusion in his book "Brochhusen - a Sauerland village book" from 1957 that Bruchhausen was first mentioned in 1144. The actual history of settlement in this area is much older. Already in the pre-Roman Iron Age there was a hill fort on the Istenberg between the Bruchhauser stones.

The moated castle Bruchhausen has been in the center of the village since the 14th century. Bruchhausen was particularly known for its nail industry in the 19th century. The St. Cyriakus Rifle Brotherhood was founded in 1872.

During the Second World War , 42 men from the village died as soldiers, most of them on the Eastern Front , or died in captivity.

After the Second World War, Bruchhausen served as a permanent camp for around 1000 Belgian soldiers for a few years.

From 1967 there was an extensive renovation of the village, in which the parish church of St. Cyriakus was rebuilt, the Medebach was partly channeled underground and a new center was created. Bruchhausen has been part of the city of Olsberg since the municipal reorganization, which came into force on January 1, 1975. The village received several prizes in competitions. Among other things, Bruchhausen was awarded a European Gold Village.

Attractions

The natural monument Bruchhauser Steine with its ramparts is known nationwide. The moated castle Bruchhausen is located in the center of the village . There are also many old half-timbered houses in the town center.
