history

The village was founded around the year 800. The place name goes back to the settlers name Azzo. It is assumed that he was a Saxon nobleman and moved through the Ruhr valley in search of a settlement in the 8th century. His clan and dependents probably moved with him. They found a suitable place to settle at the corner of the umbrella, a stream that constantly carries water, which was an important prerequisite for cattle breeding. The settlement is also located in a protected valley, which largely keeps strong winds away.

The first documentary mention is an indulgence for the Church of St. Peter in Assinghausen from 1300.

In 1827 the Sauerland native poet Friedrich Wilhelm Grimme was born in Assinghausen. The Grimme Memorial was erected in his honor in 1907 .

During the Second World War , 32 men from the village died as soldiers, most of them on the Eastern Front , or died in captivity.

On March 7, 1945, the Volkssturm from Assinghausen had to guard 1,300 foreign workers from the Soviet Union, including women and children, on their march from Elpe to Brilon-Wald. The Assinghausen community had to provide food. When an ammunition train exploded at Willingen train station on March 20 following an attack by Allied aircraft, grenades flew into the Assinghausen district. On March 31, the Volkssturm began building an anti-tank barrier on the road towards Olsberg. There were numerous armed forces associations in Assinghausen. In the night of April 3rd to 4th, the first shells from US troops from the direction of Winterberg hit the municipality. When US troops from Altenbüren reached Olsberg on April 5, the Wehrmacht units fled in the direction of Wulmeringhausen. The village was massively fired with grenades. One house hit the bull's eye. Most of the residents fled into the woods. At 3 p.m., a raid party of US soldiers reached the village. A little later, US tanks rolled into the town. A farmer was shot dead on his house stairs. All houses were searched. Former soldiers released by the Wehrmacht were taken prisoner. US artillery positioned around and in the village began firing at targets in the west. Trees and masts of the high voltage line, which stood in the direction of fire, were blown over or torn down by tanks. A field airfield for close-up reconnaissance was created. On the road to Bruchhausen, a US tank hit a mine and exploded. Up until May 8 there were assaults and thefts by former foreign workers. A few days after the German surrender, the last US soldiers withdrew. Two evacuated children died in the explosion of a Wehrmacht rifle grenade lying around.

Since January 1, 1975 the place is part of the municipality of Olsberg.

Other personalities : Karl Weiken (1895–1983), German geodesist and polar explorer.
