history

Location of Elpe and Heinrichsdorf in Olsberg

On March 6, 1945, 3,000 foreign workers, including women and children, were brought to the village from Ramsbeck in foot-deep snow under the supervision of the police and the Volkssturm . These had to be taken care of by the community. In the morning the wretched train moved on on foot, sometimes with handcarts and carts. Some separated from the train and returned to the village. An Italian prisoner died in the village and was buried in the cemetery. Foreign workers went through another eight days. On March 29, the Volkssturm was called in the village. The Volkssturm was supposed to move to Olsberg. After a day on the railway guard, everyone returned. On March 31, the village was occupied by German soldiers. On April 4th General Field Marshal Walter Model , commander of all units in the Ruhr Basin , appeared in the village to coordinate the deployment of the troops. The Volkssturm will be called again on April 5th. The men were now hiding in the forest. Now the village was shelled by US troops. One civilian was killed and one wounded. The population fled to the Lüttenberg tunnels and the Ries tunnels. 1,600 shell impacts were counted, 180 of them in the village. Twelve houses were damaged. At the Bükers farm, seven military horses were killed by direct hits. The soldiers blew up trees in the street to slow the advance of the US troops and withdrew. On April 6, the Wehrmacht reappeared and carried out an attack in the direction of Brunskapel. There were also two King Tiger tanks . After an unsuccessful attack, the Wehrmacht finally withdrew. Again the village was shot at. On April 7th, the US soldiers moved into the village. Because of a feared counterattack, the population had to stay in the tunnels for another day. Twelve German soldiers had to be buried. The bulk of US troops moved on April 12th. The rest followed on April 19th.
