geography

course

The Elpe rises as part of its longest source stream, the Walbecke in the north of the Rothaar Mountains within the Sauerland-Rothaar Mountains Nature Park . Its source is located about 2 km south-southwest of Walbecke , a district of Schmallenberg , on the common north flank of Sange ( 788.5  m ) in the east and its northwest spur Kahlenberg ( 767.4  m ) in the west at about 719  m above sea level. NHN ; from the spur the landscape leads north to the Richterskopf ( 722.1  m ).

The Elpe, whose upper reaches near the source is in the Winterberg highlands , flows after leaving the Bödefelder Forest through the Hochsauerland Gorge Mountains and predominantly in northern directions. Your upper course, called Walbecke, flows through the village of Walbecke. It then picks up the right-hand Tingelosmecke (also called Elpe ), which is south of the Altenfeld district of Winterberg on the northeast flank of the Lansenberg ( 732.3  m ) north-western foothills of the Hardt ( 761.4  m ) near a path branching off at 617.4  m to approximately 615  m height springs ( ) and then passes through the Old field. From this confluence, the Elpe flows along Kreisstraße  16, which leads from Altenfeld through the Olsberg district of Elpe to Gevelinghausen . Shortly after the Tingelosmecke joins the Elfterbach .

A little further north, the Elpe flows through the village of Elpe and passes five former stamping mills . In between, it picks up the Bach waterfall flowing from the Plästerlegge waterfall and shortly afterwards the Bremecke coming from Braberg and passes the farmers and hamlets of Wiggeringhausen, which is east of the Ohlenkopf ( 729.2  m ), and Haardt, which is part of the Olsberg district of Gevelinghausen a little to the west above the stream near the Elpe tributary Hormecke. From then on, it runs through the Sauerland depressions to the mouth of the Elpe , where the Hormecke joins a little below Haardt; The Fort Fun Adventure Land amusement park is located on this stream near the Elp .

Then the Elpe flows about 600 m southwest of Gevelinghausen and passes the former location of the former Gevelinghauser mill . It runs along the K 15, which flows from Grevelinghausen to the Bestwig district of Ostwig , where it meets the federal highway 7 near the mouth of the Elpe .

Immediately after leaving the natural park Sauerland Rothaargebirge flows through the Elpe Ostwig, shortly after successive passing under the B 7 and the upper RuhrtalBahn and after flowing through the town to about 296  m height in the coming there from Eastern Rhein influx Ruhr to open . Opposite the estuary, beyond the Ruhr, lies the Bestwig district of Alfert , parts of which belong to the Ostwig district.

With a river length of 18.7 km and a height difference of 423 m, the mean bottom slope of the Elpe with its upper reaches Walbecke is 22.6 ‰.

Protected areas

The majority of the Elpe and its floodplain lies within protected areas. Only areas in local locations are not designated as landscape protection areas or nature reserves. South of Walbecke the stream, still called Walbecke there, flows through the nature reserve Walbecketal south of Walbecke and the nature reserve Feuchtgrünland on the Walbecke . The Elpe initially runs north of Altenfeld in the Elpe Valley System nature reserve . The Upper Elpe Valley nature reserve follows directly to the village of Elpe. After the first built-up area of the village, the first small sub-area of the Elpetal landscape protection area follows below Elpe . This is followed by another built-up area of Elpe. Again, a small area of the Elpetal landscape protection area follows below Elpe, only to be replaced by a longer built-up area of Elpe. To the north of the village there is another longer section of the Elpetal nature reserve below Elpe . This is followed by the Elpe and Bremecketal nature reserve . Now follows a long stretch of the stream in the Olsberg nature reserve . Then the stream flows in the Elpetal nature reserve near Gevelinghausen . In the municipality of Bestwig , it now mostly runs in the built-up area of Ostwig . Just before it flows into the Ruhr, the Lower Elpetal landscape protection area follows .
