Les Mazures is a French commune with 903 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ardennes department in the Grand Est region .
geography
Les Mazures is located on the border with Belgium in an area rich in forests and lakes north of the lake of Vieilles Forges on the D988 departmental road , 82 kilometers northeast of Reims and 15 kilometers northwest of Charleville-Mézières . Neighboring municipalities of Les Mazures are Bourg-Fidèle in the west, Laifour in the northeast, Sécheval in the southeast and Renwez in the southwest. The municipality covers 3614 hectares, the mean height is 264 meters above sea level , the Mairie stands at an altitude of 326 meters.
Les Mazures is assigned to a type Cfb (according to Köppen and Geiger ) climate zone : warm, moderate rainy climate (C), fully humid (f), warmest month below 22 ° C, at least four months above 10 ° C (b). There is a maritime climate with a moderate summer.
history
In the 11th century, Les Mazures belonged to a de Montcornet family . The community was mentioned in a document from 1135. In another document from 1190 the altar of Sainte Gertrude de Masuris is mentioned and in 1204, in a document from Pope Innocent III. Les Mazures is called Masuris again . In 1303 the parish of Masuris was founded. Gilo de Montcornet then founded an abbey , the Abbaye de Notre Dame de Consolation des Masuris , of which nothing has survived.
The old church of Saint Gertrude appeared to the community to be too small in 1792 and was replaced by another. The work was interrupted by the French Revolution and only resumed in 1810.
From July 1942 to January 1944 there was a concentration camp in Les Mazures , in which 288 Jews from Antwerp in Belgium were interned. When the camp was dissolved in January 1944, the inmates were taken to Auschwitz . Of these, 49 survived the war, 22 had escaped and 27 survived in Auschwitz.

Culture and sights
Les Mazures is represented with two flowers in the Conseil national des villes et villages fleuris (National Council of Flowered Cities and Villages). The "flowers" are awarded in the course of a regional competition, whereby a maximum of three flowers can be achieved.
In the hamlet of Neuve-Forge ('New Hüttenwerk') a metalworking plant was built in 1755. The company's premises are 15 hectares in size. In 1916 operations were stopped. Today the preserved buildings are used as residential buildings.
In the Notre-Dame-de-Consolation chapel there is a tombstone of Jehanne de Montcornet, wife of Enguerran de Rumigny, from the 14th century. It is classified as a monument historique ( monument ).
Local products
Protected geographical indications (IGP) apply to ham ( Jambon sec or Noix de jambon sec des Ardennes ) and poultry ( Volailles de la Champagne ) in the municipality .
