Thilay is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Gedinne (Belgium) in the north and north-west, Les Hautes-Rivières in the east, Gespunsart in the south-east, Neufmanil in the south, Haulmé in the south-west, Tournavaux and Monthermé in the west, and Hargnies in the north-west.
