history
In the 3rd and 4th centuries there was a Roman fort on Mont Vireux , a mountain spur to the left of the Meuse south of the Virion estuary . Not far from there, the associated burial ground with important finds from late antiquity was uncovered. In the 8th century a collegiate church was built in what is now the district of Molhain, the crypt of which is still preserved under the current church. Mont Vireux was fortified again in the 13th to 14th centuries.
