Monthermé is a French commune with 2,335 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Grand Est region in the Ardennes department . It is located in the arrondissement of Charleville-Mézières and the canton of Bogny-sur-Meuse .

history

In the 12th century, Gunther, Duke of Rethel , founded several monasteries on his property, including the Laval Dieu monastery in 1128 in Monthermé for Premonstratensian canons, which was consecrated to Saint Remigius of Reims . In the following centuries Monthermé belonged alternately to the House of Flanders , the House of Burgundy , the Guise and the Bourbon-Conti , who in 1629 Louis XIII. left. During this time, forest management was practiced here and slate was extracted. The first puddle ovens were built in 1865 and still form the basis of the local industrial sector today.

During the western campaign in World War II , the Battle of Monthermé took place from May 13th to 15th, 1940 , in which the place was captured by the Wehrmacht and remained under German occupation until it was liberated by the Allies in August 1944 .
