Cistercian Abbey Consolation-Les-Mazures

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey Consolation-Les-Mazures was 1228-1791 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Les Mazures in the department Ardennes ( France ).

history

The lords of Montcornet Castle founded the Cistercian monastery Notre-Dame de la Consolation ("Maria Trost") in 1228 northwest of what is now Charleville-Mézières and east of the village of Les Mazures. In 1399 the abbey was downgraded to the rank of priory and placed under the monastery of Élan . The monastery chapel (rebuilt in 1863) houses the tomb of Jeanne von Montcornet (also: Jeanne von Rimogne or Jeanne von Rumigny, 1275-1303), wife of Miles de Noyers, 1271-1350, king marshal and diplomat. In 1791 the monastery was dissolved by the French Revolution . Some street and field names (including "L'Abbaye") bear witness to the former monastery. There is also the healing spring, which for a long time was the goal of a pilgrimage on Trinity Day .
