The Élan Monastery (Élant; Ellantium) is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Élan in the Ardennes department , Grand Est region , in France . It is located around 14 km south of Charleville-Mézières on the edge of the forest of Élan (Forêt d'Élan).

history

The monastery was founded in 1148 by Withier, the Count of Rethel , and was occupied by a founding convent from the Lorroy Monastery under Abbot Roger. Thus it belonged to the filiation of the Cîteaux monastery . The abbey, which served as the burial place of the Counts of Rethel, was rich in the Middle Ages; she owned two flour mills and an oil mill, as well as a foundry and iron processing facility in Boutancourt and Flize. In the 16th century it fell into the future . In 1648 it was sacked by Austrian troops during the Thirty Years' War . During the French Revolution , the abbey, now inhabited only by four monks, was dissolved.

Buildings and plant

The abbot house

From the 13th century church, which was rebuilt in 1720 and 1840 and now serves as a parish church, only two nave bays have survived. The other yokes, the transept and the flat, closed choir have been destroyed. Remains of the Gothic cloister are on the south side of the church. The abbot's house from the 15th century, flanked by four towers with a conical roof, which is also remarkable for its roof construction, is used as a residential building. Remains of the refectory and the Konversenhaus from the 16th century have also been preserved in a farm. The chapel named after the first abbot, Roger, has been preserved in the forest south of the former monastery.
