Élan Monastery (1148)

The Lorroy Monastery (Loroy; Locus Regius) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Méry-ès-Bois in the Cher department , Center-Val de Loire region , in France . It is located around 27 km north of Bourges and 6 km south of La Chapelle-d'Angillon on the edge of the forest of Saint-Palais (Forêt de Saint-Palais) in the Sologne .

history

The monastery was founded in 1125 at the instigation of the Archbishop of Bourges, Vulgrin, and was occupied by monks from La Cour-Dieu monastery from the filiation of Cîteaux monastery . It was from him that the daughter of the monastery of Élan in Champagne was founded . It suffered severe damage in the Hundred Years War and in the Wars of Religion. In 1661 it was burned to ashes. It was rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries. The French Revolution led to the dissolution of the monastery, the buildings of which were subsequently sold and mostly demolished to obtain building materials. The abbey was the inspiration for Alain-Fournier's novel Le Grand-Meaulnes ( The Great Meaulnes ).

From the 13th century church, in which several Archbishops of Bourges were buried, the triumphal arch of the choir and one of the side chapels of the aisle, which was once flat, have been preserved. The convent buildings from the 17th century still surround the cloister from the same period. The complex is registered as a monument historique .
