Laurent Henri Cottineau

Laurent Henri Cottineau (born July 3, 1863 in Luçon , † March 3, 1936 in Farnborough ) was a French Benedictine and religious historian.

life and work

Cottineau was ordained a priest in 1888 and worked in the diocese of Luçon in the Vendée department until 1896 . Then, attracted by the beauty of Gregorian chant, he entered the Benedictine Abbey of Solesmes under the influence of Joseph Pothier . From there he was sent to the English Benedictine foundation of Saint Michael's Abbey in Farnborough in 1898 . From 1910 he worked in Rome in the Vulgate Commission of Cardinal Francis Aidan Gasquet . Cottineau created a monumental lexicon of all existing monasteries of all orders with a rich bibliography, which appeared posthumously and was reprinted in 1995.
