The Upper Elpe Valley nature reserve with a size of 11.2 hectares is located south of Elpe in the urban area of Olsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2004 with the Olsberg landscape plan . To the south, the Elpe Valley System Protected Landscape Area connects . The NSG goes to the edge of the village.
Area description
The NSG is the near-natural river Elpe and the floodplain from the border to Winterberg to the village of Elpe. In the NSG there are also riparian wood along the brook, a short nameless source brook, wet and poor grassland, as well as some wood. The Elpe flows through the area from south to north, the short source stream flows into the Elpe in the south. Four small fish ponds are located in the NSG. The grassland is mostly grazed by cattle and horses.
Protection purpose
In the NSG the Elpe and the Aue should be protected. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
