The nature reserve Eisenberg and Maxstollen with a size of 8.1  ha is located northeast of Olsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis on the Eisenberg (Briloner Höhen) . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2004 with the Olsberg landscape plan . Since 2004, the NSG has been one of ten sub-areas of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Area (FFH) caves and tunnels near Bestwig and Olsberg (Natura 2000 No. DE-4616-304) in the European system of protected areas according to Natura 2000. Only a small one The area in the north of the NSG does not belong to the FFH area.

Area description

The NSG is located on the southern flank of the Eisenberg, only one of the four tunnels of the former Eisenberg mine , namely the Maxstollen, being part of it. The Maxstollen is an important wintering grounds for bats , especially for greater mouse-eared , whiskered bat and pond bat , with the stock of the year fluctuates slightly to year. The forest in the first-mentioned nature reserve consists mainly of old beech forest. There are some limestone rocks with rare crevice vegetation. Great spotted and gray woodpeckers breed . It is unclear whether the black woodpecker observed in the area breeds there. The eagle owls sighted in the nature reserve are likely to have their breeding area on the Bruchhauser Steinen .

Protection purpose

In the NSG, the tunnel and the forest should be protected. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
