The nature reserve Helmeringhauser Bruch with a size of 23.8  ha is located south of Bigge and north of Helmeringhausen in the urban area of Olsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis . In 1987 the Arnsberg district government designated the area as a nature reserve (NSG). In 2004, with the Olsberg landscape plan through the Hochsauerland district, another NSG was designated. Since the 1980s, an area of the NSG has been owned by the Association for Nature and Bird Protection in the Hochsauerlandkreis (VNV).

Area description

The NSG is the Helmeringhauser Bruch with grassland and a small planted alder forest. In the grassland there is wet and wet grassland. Most of the NSG is used as pasture grassland. Parts of the grassland fell fallow. There are bushes and small trees in the pastures. The up to 3 m wide Vossbach flows through the NSG from south to north. Three eutrophic ponds, two of which are already heavily silted up and without open water, are located north of the alder forest. Small areas of the NSG are made up of a meadow, fruit trees and an extensive butterbur high herbaceous meadow with individual alders and fruit trees.

The specialist information system of the State Office for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection in North Rhine-Westphalia explains about the NSG: “The near-natural stream and the mosaic of various wet and humid grassland in the core area determine the value. Endangered plant communities occur here. The biotope complex of bodies of water, pasture grassland of various degrees of humidity and indigenous woody plants in an open brook valley is highly representative and particularly worthy of protection in the sense of the protection goal conception for the natural area. Overly intensive grassland management in the edge areas of the NSG and increasing eutrophication have a negative effect. The orchid-rich forest rush meadow is valuable in terms of vegetation. "

Protection purpose

The break there is to be protected in the NSG. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
