The nature reserve Ruhr bei Olsberg with a size of 8.1  hectares lies west of Olsberg up to the city limits in the Hochsauerlandkreis . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2004 with the Olsberg landscape plan . The Ruhr in the NSG since 2004 provides a partial area of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat area (FFH) Ruhr (Natura 2000 no. DE-4614-303) in the European system of protected areas to Natura 2000 represents.

Area description

The NSG consists of sections of the Ruhr valley with the Ruhr and the floodplain between Bigge and the industrial area of ​​Bigge as well as below the industrial area to the state road 743 with natural to near-natural river course, river-accompanying woodland, fallow and moist meadow. A steep slope on the Ruhr with a forest on the left side of the river also belongs to the NSG. The area consists of two sub-areas. The Ruhr in the NSG is mostly six to eight m wide, but widens above the industrial area to about 15 m river width.

Protection purpose

In the NSG the Ruhr and the floodplain are to be protected. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
