from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Steinkuhle nature reserve with a size of 8.91  hectares is located west of Antfeld in the urban area of Olsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2004 with the Olsberg landscape plan . The NSG consists of three areas. The southern NSG area has been part of the fauna-flora-habitat area (FFH) caves and tunnels near Bestwig and Olsberg (Natura 2000 no. DE-4616-304) in the European system of protected areas according to Natura 2000 since 2004 .

Area description

The NSG is the site of the former slate mines Egon I, Egon II and Königsgrube with their tunnels and beech forest. In the tunnels there are winter quarters for bats, including the pond bat .

Protection purpose

In the NSG, the tunnels and the forest should be protected. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
