Ochsenberg nature reserve

The Ochsenberg nature reserve with a size of 12.4  hectares is located west of Antfeld in the urban area of Olsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2004 with the Olsberg landscape plan . Since 2004 the NSG has been one of ten sub-areas of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Area (FFH) caves and tunnels near Bestwig and Olsberg (Natura 2000-Nr. DE-4616-304) in the European system of protected areas according to Natura 2000. Only the western one The area of ​​the NSG at the city limits belongs to the FFH area.

Area description

The NSG is the site of a former slate mine with tunnels and spoil heaps. The forest in the NSG consists of oak and hornbeam. There are winter quarters for bats in the tunnel.

Protection purpose

In the NSG, the tunnel and the forest should be protected. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
