Robert Waissenberger

Robert Waissenberger (born August 16, 1926 in Vienna ; † March 28, 1987 there ) was an Austrian art historian and museum director .

life and work

Waissenberger studied history, art history and German literature at the University of Vienna from 1945 to 1949 and worked as a Dr. phil. from 1949 on in the municipal department  7, the cultural office of the city of Vienna. From 1959 to 1974 he was a consultant for fine arts there. From 1974 onwards, proposed by City Councilor for Culture Gertrude Fröhlich-Sandner , until his death he acted as head of the then Municipal Department 10, Museums of the City of Vienna . Under his leadership, as the aeiou-Österreich-Lexikon wrote, the Historical Museum of the City of Vienna gained international recognition through its lively exhibition activities, and numerous branch offices (memorials for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Joseph Haydn , Ludwig van Beethoven , Adalbert Stifter ) were opened as well as existing ones.

Waissenberger directed major cultural and historical exhibitions such as Dream and Reality. Vienna 1870–1930 , shown in the Künstlerhaus Wien in 1984/1985 , architecturally designed by Hans Hollein , a record result with over 600,000 paying visitors, and advocated the founding of the Vienna Jewish Museum . He published numerous publications. His successor as museum director until 2003 was his colleague Günter Düriegl.

Waissenberger acted as President of the Austrian Museum Association. He was appointed Hofrat in 1977, received the Cross of Honor for Science and Art in 1986 and in 1987 was promoted by the City of Vienna to Senior Senate Councilor, the highest rank of civil servant.

Waissenberger's wife Hildegard (is) Waissenberger also worked in the city administration's cultural department; she was the assistant to City Councilor for Culture Gertrude Fröhlich-Sandner , and later General Secretary of the Wiener Festwochen .
