Altenfeld is a district of the city of Winterberg with almost 200 inhabitants. It is located about eight kilometers northwest of the core city and northeast of neighboring Schmallenberg in the Rothaargebirge in North Rhine-Westphalia . The mayor is currently (2020) Frank Fladung.

The corridor of today's village Altenfeld belonged to a village called Merklinghausen in the late Middle Ages. This had already become a desert before 1446 . The Merklinghauser Flur belonged to the Lords of Meschede. Around 1541, they set up five farms in the area "on the old field". These formed the nucleus for today's village of Altenfeld. Around 1550 there was also a kötterstelle . At first this newly founded settlement was called the "Niege Dorff". The name Altenfeld later caught on. In the appraisal registers of 1543 and 1565 Altenfeld is still referred to as "Mercklinghaußen" or "Mercklinghaussen". There is evidence of a chapel in the village for the year 1716. At that time the village belonged to the parish of Bödefeld.

Before 1975 Altenfeld was part of the municipality of Bödefeld-Land in the Fredeburg district . However, it was an exclave that was separated from the main part of the municipality by the municipality of Bödefeld . Since the place was more economically oriented towards Siedlinghausen , it came with it during the municipal reorganization on January 1, 1975 to the enlarged city of Winterberg.

The place is on the edge of the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park . Landesstraße 740 connects Altenfeld with Siedlinghausen to the east and Bödefeld-Freiheit to the west. District road 16 leads north towards Elpe . The Elpe flows through the village .

There is a lively club life in Altenfeld: there is the rifle club, the fire brigade, the tourist association and the water association.

In 2014, an archaeological excavation of the LWL branch in Olpe was carried out in Altenfeld , which unearthed late Iron Age finds and findings from a homestead .
