The Olpe branch of the LWL Archeology for Westphalia is responsible for archaeological and palaeontological issues relating to the preservation of monuments in the Arnsberg district. The Olpe branch was set up by LWL Archeology for Westphalia in 1980.

Premises

The branch is housed in a listed building on August 23, 1983 on the street “In der Desert”, which was built between 1895 and 1897 as a plastered building .

The two-storey building with an attic used to be the higher city school with eight classrooms. In a niche of the building there is a statue of Saint Aloysius, the patron of the student youth.

Area of responsibility

The branch is the workplace of 13 employees who take care of the archaeological and palaeontological issues relating to the preservation of monuments in the Arnsberg administrative region .

The building includes workshops, various storage rooms, meeting rooms, a map room and a library. So-called new finds are first delivered to the branch, where they are then recorded, photographed and, if necessary, cleaned. In the early days of the branch, the objects were mainly drawn by hand in a ratio of 2: 1. However, this way of working has been used less with technical developments and is only rarely used today.

Some finds are also forwarded to the main office in Münster.

In the cartographic department, the locations are recorded on maps. Furthermore, it is examined whether the find is or was in an archaeologically important area. It can be important for archaeologists to react quickly, especially with ongoing construction projects. Furthermore, the mapping in the branch office and the subsequent publication serve as the basis for a classification in the national context of the work. The meaning of a find sometimes only becomes clear after a comparison.

The Olpe branch is supported by the independent urban archeologies of the cities of Dortmund and Soest.

Head of the branch office

Michael Baales is the head of the branch , Eva Cichy and Manuel Zeiler are the scientific advisors.
