history

The exact year of construction of the castle can no longer be proven today, but a heading above the portal of the castle points to the year 1071. The place name is mentioned for the first time in a donation document from January 22nd, 1130, in that of the Knights "von Bochunna " the speech is. Not until 1223 is there talk of a member of this family again, Petrus de Buochnase. Adelheid von Buonas was then the last representative of her family, she married Ulrich von Hertenstein in 1250, with which the castle fell into the hands of the Lucerne noble family von Hertenstein .

Because of differences over the rulership between the Zug estate and the Hertenstein family, who were supported by the Lucerne residents, the Zugers threatened to take over the rule and with it Buonas Castle militarily in 1421. The Hertenstein family therefore hired men of war who were stationed on the rule, while the Zugers hired their soldiers for a dispute. This problem was only solved by an arbitration ruling by the Federal Diet in 1424 . He gave the city train the high jurisdiction over the rule, but the Hertenstein family the low and medium jurisdiction .

In 1478 the castle burned down to the ground. Because of repeated disputes with the Zugers and differences of opinion among the heirs, reconstruction could not begin until 1494. The new building was completed in 1498 and received an additional floor. After the last heiress of the castle married Johann Martin Schwytzer in October 1654, she passed the inheritance to her husband and the rule of the Hertenstein family over Buonas was ended. In contrast to the previous lords, the new lord of the castle strived for a good relationship with the Zug residents. On March 28, 1782, Josef Xaver Thüring Schwytzer sold the castle for 37,625 guilders to two citizens of the city of Zug, with the Zug residents financing two thirds of the purchase price.

In the following years numerous changes of ownership followed, which neglected the entire property. In 1862, Count Mieczislaw de Komar from Paris acquired the castle and restored it at great expense. 1871 the property then goes to the then director of the Zurich Maschinenfabrik Escher-Wyss about Carl August von Gonzenbach Escher, which converts the castle grounds into a park landscape and the renowned English architect William Wilkinson 1873-1877 a large villa in the neo-Gothic style , the so-called "New Castle" was built. The building was one of the main works of secular neo-Gothic in Switzerland. In 1970 the building was demolished after almost 100 years and replaced by a country house. The reason given by the owner at the time, Annie Bodmer-Abegg, was that the New Palace could no longer be operated economically and “no longer met the demand for contemporary living comfort”. Despite heavy criticism from the Federal Commission for the Preservation of Monuments and the architectural historian of the ETH Zurich, Paul Hofer , the building management of the Canton of Zug did not contradict this argument and stated that the building was not visible from outside the park area. The demolition is now rated as one of the greatest losses in architectural substance in the canton. As a result, the canton of Zug hired a full-time monument conservator. In 1997, the Basel pharmaceutical company Hoffmann-La Roche acquired the facility in order to set up a training center for executive staff. With the purchase, the company committed to preserving the historic buildings.
