Federal Commission for the Preservation of Monuments
The Federal Commission for Monument Preservation (EKD) ( French Commission fédérale des monuments historiques , Italian Commissione federale dei monumenti storici ) is in Switzerland advisory, non-parliamentary commission of the Federal for historic preservation and archeology . Its 15 members are directly elected by the Federal Council. The Federal Office for Culture (BAK) runs the secretariat .
Stefan Wuelfert has chaired the commission since 2019, while Bettina Hedinger and Sabine Nemec-Piguet are vice-presidents. The Commission Secretary is Irène Bruneau.
The Commission
- advises the departments on fundamental questions of monument preservation and archeology
- participates in the implementation of the federal law on nature and homeland protection and in the preparation and updating of inventories of objects of national importance
- prepares expert reports on questions of monument preservation and archeology for the federal and cantonal authorities
- at the request of the Federal Office of Culture, gives its opinion on requests for financial aid in the field of monument preservation
- promotes basic work and deals with developments in monument preservation and archeology
- maintains cooperation and scientific exchange with all interested parties.
The protection of monuments and the preservation of monuments are primarily cantonal tasks; Federal authorities only have subsidiary competencies.
