The Federal Act on Nature Conservation and Heritage Protection ( NHG , SR 451) of July 1, 1966 is a federal act in Switzerland . It came into force on January 1, 1967.

Conceived as a framework law, it serves as the basis to

  • To protect the landscape and townscape , historical sites, natural monuments and cultural monuments "when fulfilling federal tasks",
  • to support cantonal monument preservation through federal contributions,
  • to issue direct federal protection provisions for the benefit of the native flora and fauna,
  • to promote teaching and research.

More recently, the law has been amended to facilitate the establishment of national and natural parks .
