Wildenburg Castle (Canton Zug)
Wildenburg Castle

The Wildenburg is a ruined castle in the municipality of Baar in the canton of Zug ( Switzerland ). It lies on a rock spur above the gorge formed by the Schwerzenbach and the Lorze , south-east of the Lorzentobel Bridge .

history

The Wildenburg was founded in the 13th century by a branch of the Lords of Hünenberg , feudal bearers of the Counts of Kyburg and Habsburg with headquarters in Hünenberg Castle , as the center of a new clearing rule . The castle had a visual connection to the bridge crossing of the Lorze ( Lorzentobelbrücke ) and thus controlled the traffic from the valley to the higher villages. The first system probably consisted only of a stone ring with wooden structures leaning against it. Only later was followed by a round dungeon with a wall thickness of 3.5 meters and a palace in the northeast corner. Earlier representations of the castle suggest that there was once an outer wall, but there is no trace of it today.

The castle was first mentioned in writing in 1309, at that time still Wildenberg , as the most important part of the legacy of Gottfried von Hünenberg. In 1386 the Knights of Hünenberg fought against the Confederates in the Battle of Sempach on the side of Habsburg Austria . It is unclear whether after the defeat, in addition to their ancestral castle, Hünenberg Castle, the Wildenburg was also destroyed. In the following decades the family had to sell their goods. In 1409 Rudolf von Hünenberg described himself as a resident of Wildenberg , but in 1416 Grüter farmers acquired the property of the castle that was in the immediate vicinity. The family, who had had citizenship of the city of Zug since 1383, probably died out around 1450.

The castle was then left to decay and used as a quarry in the 16th century .

Excavation and redevelopment

When the first excavations began in 1938, only the uppermost parts of the keep were visible. After the masonry was exposed, but insufficiently preserved, the decay continued and in 1956 the northwest corner of the Bering crashed into the adjacent gorge.

In 1978 the castle passed from private ownership into the ownership of the Canton of Zug, but a credit for the restoration was refused in 1981 by Zug's electorate . It was not until 1985, thanks to the private initiative of the Pro Wildenburg association , that a complete restoration with archaeological follow-up investigations could be carried out.

Are preserved, except for the part crashed northeast, the surrounding walls , the palace and the castle keep . In the entrance to the keep, the wall thickness of 3.5 meters is clearly visible.
