The Ohlenkopf , also called Ohlenberg , is 729.2  m above sea level. NHN high foothills of the Wiedegge ( 732.3 m ) in the Rothaar Mountains  . It is located near Helmeringhausen in the North Rhine-Westphalian Hochsauerlandkreis .

The Ohlenkopf lies within the Sauerland in the northern part of the Rothaar Mountains. Belonging to the area of ​​the city of Olsberg, it rises to the east above the Elpe valley as a steep north-west foothill of the Wiedegge, to which a 698  m high saddle leads. Its peak is 1.9 km south-southwest of the valley of Voßbachs (Voss Bach) Olsberger hamlet located Helmeringhausen . Other nearby towns are Wulmeringhausen (to Olsberg), 2.4 km to the south-east, and Andreasberg (to Bestwig ), 2 km to the west, as the crow flies .

On the mountain are part of the protected landscape area Olsberg ( CDDA -No 555,554,922;. 1984 expelled; 79.3944  square kilometers in size).

Natural allocation

The Ohlenkopf belongs in the natural spatial main unit group Süderbergland (No. 33), in the main unit Rothaargebirge (with Hochsauerland ) (333) and in the subunit Hochsauerländer Schluchtgebirge (333.8) to the natural area Ramsbecker ridge and gorges ( Ramsbecker heights ; 333.81). The landscape falls to the northwest into the sub-unit Oberruhrgesenke (335.0), which is part of the main unit Sauerländer Senken (335).

useful information

The Ohlenkopf, which was still bare around 1990, was largely reforested with spruce trees , which meanwhile only allow an unobstructed view in western directions at the summit - with appropriate visibility even as far as the Ebbegebirge 50 km away .

In 1983 a 14.3 m high summit cross was erected a few meters from the summit . It was destroyed by Hurricane Kyrill in January 2007, but rebuilt in November 2007.

Traffic and walking

To the west past the Ohlenkopf, the district road  16 ( Gevelinghausen - Elpe ) leads along the Elpe, and to the north runs along the Vossbach stream leading from Bigge to Helmeringhausen in the direction of the mountain. For example, starting at these roads you can hike on forest trails and paths to the mountain.
