history

Gierskoppbachtal / Elleringhausen

Elleringhausen was first mentioned in a document in 1222 as "Eilhardinchusen". The area was settled as early as 900. In the early 15th century, 13 homeowners were obliged to pay taxes to the parish of Bigge . In the 16th century Elleringhausen had 16 Solstätten . Around 1640 what is probably the oldest building still preserved, Franzes Haus, was built. In 1873 Elleringhausen was connected to the railway network with the completion of the tunnel (1872) to Brilon Wald . The school was built in 1904. The expansion of the water supply began in 1911, followed by the electricity connection in 1920.

During the Second World War , 41 men from the village, most of them on the Eastern Front , died or died in captivity.

On March 30, 1945, infantry of the Wehrmacht , men from the Volkssturm and Reich Labor Service were relocated to the village to defend Elleringhausen. The fighters were armed only with rifles, hand grenades and a few bazookas. The day before, US Army units had occupied the Brilon Forest to the east. All men able to work had to build an anti-tank barrier out of trees in the direction of Brilon-Wald with the Volkssturm from Bruchhausen. The next day a direction Olsberg was built. On April 1, an infantry company marched towards Brilon Forest to cut the US troops' supply route there. In the afternoon the ailing unit returned to the village. On April 2, a house was hit by a shell. Heavy shelling of the village began on April 3. Nine buildings were hit. Four people died in one house, including a soldier and an Eastern worker. One woman died of her injury the next day. The German soldiers were increasingly pushed back into the village. US tanks took up position above the village. In the village, residents hung up white flags and a German NCO went to meet the US soldiers. US troops moved into the village without a fight. The German soldiers were taken prisoner. Eight soldiers who died around Elleringhausen were buried in the village cemetery.

In 1964 the construction of a new church began, the old one was demolished. On January 1, 1975 Elleringhausen lost its independence as a community and became part of the city of Olsberg. The Elleringhausen station was abandoned in 1978.

Fire oak

Fire oak in the Sauerland, illuminated crown, the work is by Jürgen Suberg
Fire oak, carved trunk

On the Rhine-Weser watershed between Elleringhausen and Brilon-Wald , directly on the Rothaarsteig , stands the fire oak, which is around 10 meters high. It was created under the leadership of the craftsman Roland Bongert from Olsberg-Brunskappel. A bronze band loops helically around the trunk, which is decorated with painted carved reliefs, to the former summit of the tree and ends in a symbolic flame made of titanium sheets . The oak tells about the origin of life, the relationship between people and fire, right up to today's high-tech age. Numerous showcases around the oak serve for explanation and documentation. In the dark, the fire oak is illuminated with artificial flames. In the nature reserve below the fire oak, thousands of March cups bloom in March . The vernacular affectionately calls this part of the forest lily of the valley meadow. The work of art was created in connection with the information and demonstration center for renewable energy in Olsberg . In order to interest tourists and hikers in the information center, the Olsberg Forestry Office had the adventure station “Warmth grows in the forest” with the work of art as the visual focus. There, visitors can find out more about the energy use of wood.
