The Catholic branch church St. Laurentius is a church building in Elleringhausen , a district of the city of Olsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture of the old church

Originally there was a chapel built in 1762 on the site , which was demolished in 1890. There are still drawings of the old chapel in the parish chronicle from 1889. In the same year, the construction of a new church began. The St. Laurentius church was single-nave with three bays and deep arches . The choir apse was semicircular, the tower stood south of the choir. The edges of the triumphal arch in the rectangular building were badly broken. The walls of the south wall were divided by three, those of the north wall by two and the two choir walls each by a segmented arched window. Behind the altar was a small sacristy , from which a staircase led to the roof. Above the choir roof, leaning against the east gable of the nave, was a small square bell tower with a tented roof . The ceiling in the nave was initially a smooth trellis ceiling, but was later vaulted with a basket arch barrel , it reached up to the collar beams in the roof. The old church was demolished in 1969 and a new village square was created in its place.

New church from 1964

The new St. Laurentius Church was designed by the architect Johannes Becker from Kassel. The equipment was significantly influenced by E. Suberg. The church is on the northern outskirts of the village in Wiesengrund on the road to Olsberg. The tower of the unadorned concrete church in the typical style of the 1960s church stands a little apart.
