The Elleringhäuser Tunnel , also known as the tunnel under the Habberg , near Olsberg and Brilon in the North Rhine-Westphalian Hochsauerlandkreis , is a 1393 m long, single-tube, double-track railway tunnel on the Upper Ruhr Valley Railway, completed in 1872 .

Geographical location

The Elleringhäuser Tunnel is located within the Sauerland in the northeast part of the Rothaargebirge between Elleringhausen (southeastern part of Olsberg ) in the Gierskoppbach valley in the west-southwest and Brilon-Wald (southern part of Brilon ) in the valley of the Hoppecke in the east-northeast; the border between the two cities runs over the saddle crossed by the tunnel ( 609.4  m above sea  level ) between the Habberg ( 653.3  m ) in the north and Ginsterkopf ( 663.3  m ) in the south and also over both mountains. The tunnel, located at kilometer 240.1, connects Olsberg train station (km 233.9) with Brilon Wald train station (km 241.8). It runs under the Rhine-Weser watershed ; the Gierskoppbach drains through the Ruhr into the Rhine, the Hoppecke flows over the Diemel into the Weser.

The west-south-west portal (near the former Elleringhausen stop ) is at around 450  m and the east-north-east portal crossed by Bundesstraße 251 at around 460  m ; the highest site above the tunnel is near the aforementioned saddle at an altitude of almost 620  m . While the west-south-west portal is passed directly south of the small Gierskoppbach tributary Habbecke, the tunnel near the east-north-east portal runs under the small Hoppecke tributary Äskerfsiepen.

History and description

The Elleringhausen Tunnel was built from 1868 to 1872 with one tube and two tracks. Both portals were bricked up. You cannot look through the tunnel from one end to the other, as the tunnel areas near the portal are each slightly curved.

Refurbishment is scheduled to begin in autumn 2021 and will take around four years in total.
