The Hoppernkopf , not to be confused with the nearby Hopperkopf , between Bruchhausen and Willingen is 805.6  m above sea level. NHN high mountain of the Rothaargebirge in the Hochsauerlandkreis in North Rhine-Westphalia , the summit of which is near the border with the Waldeck-Frankenberg district in Hesse .

The Hoppernkopf lies at the interface between Sauerland and Upland between Hoppern (to Willingen ) in the east and Bruchhausen (to Olsberg ) in the west. Its peak rises on the North Rhine-Westphalian side in the Brilon district about 300 m northwest of the border with the northwestern part of North Hesse. The Hessian areas of the wooded mountain belong to the Diemelsee Nature Park . To the north, the landscape leads over to the Schellhorn ridge with the Großer Kluskopf ( 761  m ) and the Rehkopf ( 674.7  m ). The Hoppecke flows east past the Hoppernkopf, the Schmala rises to the southwest of its summit region and the stream on the eastern flank of the state border , both tributaries of the Hoppecke.

The Hoppernkopf belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Süderbergland (No. 33), in the main unit Rothaargebirge (with Hochsauerland ) (333) and in the subunit Winterberger Hochland (333.5) to the natural area Langenberg (333.58), with the subunit Hochsauerland Schluchtgebirge (333.8 ) borders with the natural area Schellhorn and Treiswald (333.82).

Almost 1 km south-southwest of the Hoppernkopf summit, above the source area of ​​the Schmala, there is a former execution site ( ) of the Kurkölner Gogericht . It is located directly southeast of the state border on Hessian territory at an altitude of 762.6  m (instead of 800 m according to the inscription on the memorial stone there).

“Here, in the former Electoral Cologne-Waldeck border area, there was a court of the Electoral Cologne Gogericht and Medebach office since the 13th century. The judges in office at the time were von Gaugreben, whose name is derived from their official title as a gographer. "

Landscape protection

On the North Rhine-Westphalian side of the Hoppernkopf are parts of the landscape protection areas Hoppecke-Diemel-Bergland (landscape type A) ( CDDA no. 345020; designated 1989; 78.03  km² in size) and Olsberg (CDDA no. 555554922; 1984; 79.409 km²) .

Transport, hiking and sports

East of the Hoppernkopf leads in the Hoppecketal between Brilon-Wald and Willingen, the federal road 251 , from which a spur road branches off in Willingen to the district of Hoppern and thus to the southern flank of the mountain. Its summit, the source area of ​​the Schmala and the place of execution can be reached on forest and hiking trails , for example on the Rothaarsteig , which runs through the source areas of Hoppecke and Schmala and the aforementioned place of execution . A drag lift leads from Willingen to the southern high mountain areas and another to the eastern flank, which with its ski slopes belong to the Willingen ski area .
