The Willingen im Upland ski area , the northeastern foothills of the Rothaar Mountains , is a winter sports area near Willingen in the north Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg . With 16 kilometers of slopes, 16 lifts and a total transport capacity of 14,350 people per hour, it is the largest ski area in Hesse . It has joined forces with ski areas in neighboring North Rhine-Westphalia to form the ticket association Wintersport-Arena Sauerland .

Geographical location

The Willingen ski area is located in the Diemelsee nature park south and west of the center of Willingen at an altitude of between 577  m (in the Hoppecketal) and 840  m (at the mountain station of the "K1" chairlift). It is divided into a slope area on the north side of the Ettelsberg and a smaller slope area on the eastern slopes of Hoppernkopf and Ritzhagen . These two sectors of the ski area are spatially separated from each other by the Hoppecke valley . The extension of the Köhlerhagen exit, which took place in 2018, enables an easier transition between the sectors, although there are still two side streets with little traffic to cross.

The ski area is connected to federal road 251 ( Brilon - Willingen - Korbach - Kassel ) via internal roads . Access points are the valley station of the Ettelsberg cable car (street "Zur Hoppecke"), the Köhlerhagen ("Zur Ruthenaar"), the Sonnenhang ("In der Bärmecke") and the Ritzhagen ("Zum Ritzhagen"). There is a train connection on the Korbach - Brilon-Wald route with Willingen train station, which is around 800 m from the ski area.

Winter operation

The Willingen ski area has the following lifts for the 2018/19 season:

  • 8-seater gondola lift Ettelsberg (year of construction 2007)
  • 8-seater chairlift Köhlerhagen "K1" (built in 2018)
  • 6-seater chairlift Ritzhagen (yoc 2013)
  • 5 drag lifts ("Sonnenhang", 4 × "Wilddieb")
  • 1 rope lift ("Sonnenhang connection lift")
  • as well as 7 conveyor belts.

All chairlifts and the gondola lift are detachable systems. The Köhlerhagen "K1" chairlift, newly built for the 2018/19 season, is the first in the Sauerland with heated seats and weather protection hoods. With a length of 1,442 m, it opens up the greatest height difference of all lifts in the Rothaar Mountains (263 m). Of the total of 16 km of slopes according to the operator, around 9 km are artificially snowed with over 100 permanently installed snow guns. The difficulty of the runs is classified as easy to medium, the longest run is around 2000 m long. In the ski area, depending on snow conditions and demand, floodlit skiing is offered up to three times a week , then 8 facilities are open until late at night.

In Willingen and the districts of Usseln , Rattlar , Eimelrod and Schwalefeld , over a dozen cross- country trails are groomed, some of which are interconnected. They have a total length of 99.6 km. The longest circuit is the "Upland" trail with 17.7 km.

Summer operation

The Ettelsberg cable car transports pedestrians all year round and mountain bikers in summer. On the Ettelsberg there is the Hochheideturm with a climbing wall, restaurants, hiking trails (including the European long-distance hiking trail E1 ) and the starting points of various mountain bike routes ("Willingen Bike Park"). The new 8-seater chairlift Köhlerhagen will also be available for the transport of mountain bikers from summer 2019. This has separate armchair sets for summer and winter use. There is a 700 m long summer toboggan run at the Ritzhagen .
