The Hochheideturm (also called Ettelsbergturm or Willinger Hochheideturm ) is a 59 m high observation tower in the Rothaar Mountains at 837.7  m above sea level. NHN high Ettelsberg near Willingen in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district , Hesse . It is named after the Niedersfelder Hochheide , 2 km southwest of the tower .

Tower description

The Hochheideturm, the foundation of which is 831  m above sea level, stands about 150 m east-northeast of the Ettelsberg summit above the Ettelsberg gondola and the Willingen ski area there ; Next to the tower is a storage basin, the water of which is used to make artificial snow on ski slopes.

The tower has a fully glazed viewing platform with a diameter of 12 m and a height of 44 m, which at 875  m corresponds to the highest accessible vantage point in northwest Germany. The platform is accessible via 241 steps or an elevator for eight people. There is an all-round view of large parts of the Rothaargebirge, Hochsauerland and Upland . On a clear day you can see the Teutoburg Forest , Weser Uplands , Harz , Habichtswälder Bergland , Hohen Meißner , Thuringian Forest , Knüll , Kellerwald , the Rhön , the Vogelsberg and Taunus .

Above the viewing platform there is a technical floor in which transmitters for the non-public land radio service are housed. A climbing wall is attached to the northwest side of the tower , which is one of the highest artificial climbing walls in Europe with a height of 42 m.

Construction, construction time and inauguration

The Hochheideturm, a reinforced concrete structure with an octagonal cross-section, was designed by the architects Karl Suck in Korbach. With the construction of the tower, which was owned by Ettelsberg-Seilbahn GmbH & Co. KG. and its construction costs amounted to 2 million euros, started in November 2001 after the building permit was granted on October 16, 2001.

The foundation stone was laid in November 2001. The foundation was completed on January 31, 2002, and construction work began on April 15, 2002. The topping-out ceremony for the tower was on August 19, 2002, and construction work was completed on September 27, 2002. On September 28, 2002 day the tower was opened to the public. The official inauguration took place on October 18, 2002.
