The Schellhorn is located in the north of the Rothaargebirge. Directly to the west outside the Diemelsee nature park , it extends between the Brilon district of Brilon-Wald in the north, the somewhat distant Olsberg districts of Elleringhausen in the north-west and Bruchhausen in the west, all of which are in Westphalia , and Willingen in the south-east , which is also somewhat distant Hoppers in the south, which are located in neighboring North Hesse .

The Schellhorn belongs in the natural spatial main unit group Süderbergland (No. 33), in the main unit Rothaargebirge (with Hochsauerland ) (333) and in the subunit Hochsauerländer Schluchtgebirge (333.8) mainly to the natural area Schellhorn and Treiswald (333.82). To the north, the landscape drops into the Habuch natural area (333.83) and to the south it leads over to the subunit Winterberger Hochland (333.5) with the Hoppernkopf ( 805.6  m ) in the Langenberg natural area (333.58) .

The ridge is separated from the Hoppernkopf by a 78 m deep notch , while that of the Hoppernkopf to the Langenberg is only 40 m deep. Regardless of this, the Hoppernkopf , which is also between Schellhornbach and Hoppecke , is often seen as part of the Schellhorn.

Waters

The Diemel tributary Hoppecke runs east past the Schellhorn , into which the Schmala (also called Schmalah or Schellhornbach ) flows north of the ridge to the west ; at the Schmala lying dam Schmala includes among others the Schmalastausee belongs. The sources of the Hoppecke tributaries Steinsiepen and Klußsiepen are located in the area of ​​the Großer Kluskopf .

Protected areas

Parts of the Hoppecke-Diemel-Bergland landscape protection area (landscape type A) ( CDDA no. 345020; designated 1989; 78.03  km² in size) lie on the Schellhorn . In addition, the Großer Kluskopf nature reserve is located north of the summit of the Großer Kluskopf (CDDA no. 329397; 2001; 2.53  ha ).

Traffic and walking

East past the Schellhorn in the Hoppecketal between Brilon-Wald in the north-north-west and Willingen in the south-south-east leads the federal road 251 , from which the state road  743 branches off south of Brilon-Wald towards Elleringhausen and Bruchhausen . The ridge can be reached on forest and hiking trails , for example on the Rothaarsteig .
