The castle was built around 1150. It was first mentioned in a document in 1194. Knight Godebert von Diedenshausen is mentioned in a Mainz document . In 1274 a descendant of Godebert - Gerlach von Diedenshausen - joins the Teutonic Order . With the extinction of the knight family around 1400, the village and castle complex became desolate . When the village was repopulated around 1500, the now dilapidated castle complex was no longer of any importance and was not rebuilt.

Remnants of the walls of the old castle were found during renovation work on the chapel and the adjacent cemetery.
