Günther Wrede (born March 28, 1900 in Marburg , † October 13, 1977 in Osnabrück ) was a German historian and senior archivist.

Otto Ludwig Günther Wrede was born on March 28, 1900 in Marburg as the second son of the professor of German studies and private lecturer Ferdinand Wrede and his wife Malwine, nee. Wimmer born.

After graduating from high school in 1918 at the Philippinum grammar school in Marburg , Wrede first began studying German and classical philology in Marburg and Tübingen , but then switched to history. He returned to Marburg and completed his studies there until 1925. In Marburg, his lecturer, Professor of Medieval History and Historical Auxiliary Sciences, Edmund Stengel, pointed the way for Wrede's future life. In February 1925, Wrede presented his study The Territorial History of the County of Wittgenstein as a dissertation and was awarded a doctorate due to his work at the University of Marburg. phil. PhD.

This extensive historical work was presented in print in 1927 and forms " the foundation of all historical work in Wittgenstein" up to the present day .

After receiving his doctorate, Wrede stayed in Marburg as Stengel's assistant until 1926 and then trained as an archivist at the Prussian Secret State Archives in Berlin-Dahlem.

Wrede had been a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia since May 13, 1932 .

After his use in the State Archives in Münster and Marburg - where he had played a key role in the move of the archive from Marburg Castle to the current archive building since 1934 - Wrede was transferred to Osnabrück in 1939, where he was entrusted with the management of the local archive. Shortly before his death, he completed his late work, the Historical Directory of the Former Prince Diocese of Osnabrück . Wrede remained in Osnabrück as director of the State Archives until his retirement and died there on October 13, 1977.
