The Herrlohtunnel near Winterberg in the North Rhine-Westphalian Hochsauerlandkreis ( Germany ) is a 168 m long, single-tube road tunnel on a common section of the federal highways 236 and 480 .
The tunnel is located in the southeast flank of Herrloh ( 732.9 m above sea level ), an elevation in the Rothaar Mountains . Its overburden is only slight and the area above the center of the tunnel is about 700 m above sea level. The tunnel was built from 1994 to 1995 as part of the Winterberg bypass road and since it was opened to traffic in 1995 it has led traffic on two lanes directly west of the Winterberg core city.
Almost the entire length of the tunnel runs below the exit areas of the ski slopes of the Winterberg ski lift carousel , which are served by three drag lifts . About 600 m northeast of the tunnel, the Rothaarsteig , a long-distance hiking trail that runs past it to the northwest and also passes the southwest portal, crosses both federal roads on a bridge.
About 800 m (as the crow flies ) east of the Herrloh tunnel is the Waltenberg tunnel on the B 236 under the Winterberg city center .
