The Waltenberg Tunnel in Winterberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis , North Rhine-Westphalia ( Germany ), is a 230 m long, single-tube road tunnel along the federal highway 236 .
The tunnel is located under the center of the town of Winterberg in the Rothaargebirge and crosses the streets Am Alten Garten , Am Waltenberg and Im Hohlen Seifen as well as Nuhnestrasse . Its overburden is only slight, and the area above the center of the tunnel is at the intersection of Am Waltenberg and Im Hohlen Seifen at an altitude of about 670 m . The tunnel was built between 1994 and 1995 as part of the modernization of the town center and the associated traffic calming , and since it was opened to traffic (1995) has carried through traffic with two lanes under the city center .
About 800 m (as the crow flies ) to the west - but still in the Winterberg city area - is the Herrloh Tunnel on the Winterberg bypass road (B 236 and B 480 ) .
