Manfred Pranger (born January 25, 1978 in Hall in Tirol ) is a former Austrian ski racer . He became world champion in his specialty slalom in 2009 and won a total of three world cup races .
biography
Pranger came to ski at the age of two through his father Josef, who worked as a ski instructor in winter and is now the leaseholder of the Tribulaunhütte . He completed his school education at the ski school in Neustift and at the ski trade school in Stams . The first top 10 place in an FIS race was achieved by Pranger in December 1996. The first podium places and victories followed in the 1998/1999 season, after which it was regularly used in the European Cup from next winter . His breakthrough came in the 2000/01 season when he won the slalom classification with two wins in the slaloms of Donnersbachwald and Pozza di Fassa and another three podium places. In the same winter he also competed in his first three World Cup races , in which he was twice in the top 25.
After his European Cup success, Pranger had a fixed starting place for the 2001/02 World Cup season . In December he achieved his first top 10 result with sixth place in the slalom in Kranjska Gora and with two further top 10 placements in Adelboden and Kitzbühel he qualified for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , where he won the first Slalom run failed. Pranger presented itself very consistently in the 2002/03 World Cup season . He was classified among the top ten in nine out of ten slaloms, six times among the top five. Only in Kitzbühel did he not finish. At the end of the season he was third in the Hafjell slalom on the podium for the first time and thus achieved fifth place in the Slalom World Cup. He was also fifth at the 2003 World Cup in St. Moritz . In addition, he became Austrian slalom champion for the first time in 2003 .
The 2003/04 season began with three podium finishes (third in Park City and Madonna di Campiglio and second in Flachau ). This was followed by two top 10 results, but also four failures. At the end of the season he was back on the podium in Sestriere as third and finished seventh in the Slalom World Cup. He was able to successfully defend his Austrian slalom champion title in 2004 . In the 2004/05 season , Pranger initially drove four times in the top ten. On January 23, 2005, he celebrated his first victory in Kitzbühel and two days later, on exactly his 27th birthday, he was at the top of the winners' podium for the second time in the Schladming night slalom . At the 2005 World Championships in Bormio , which took place two weeks later , Pranger was in second place after the first slalom run, but was eliminated after a goal error in the second run. In the two World Cup slaloms after the World Cup, Pranger only achieved a 14th place, which brought him to third place in the Slalom World Cup.
In the next winter, Pranger could not match the results of the previous year. In the 2005/06 season he fell out of five out of ten slaloms and was only twice in the top ten, which is why he did not qualify for the Olympic Winter Games in Turin within the Austrian team . In the Slalom World Cup he fell back to 23rd place. The 2006/07 season went better again. Pranger drove into the top ten in six slaloms and thus finished twelfth in the Slalom World Cup. He was also able to qualify for the 2007 World Cup in Åre , where he finished fifth. At the beginning of the 2007/08 season he achieved two top 10 placements on the Reiteralm and in Bad Kleinkirchheim . In the third World Cup slalom of the winter in Alta Badia , Pranger suffered a cruciate ligament tear and a meniscus tear in his right knee, which is why he had to end the season early.
In the 2008/09 season , Pranger found its way back to the top. On January 11, 2009, he was second in the Adelboden slalom for the first time in four years and celebrated his third World Cup victory a week later in Wengen . He also achieved second place in the night slalom on the Planai in Schladming and with another three top 10 results he took fourth place in the Slalom World Cup. He celebrated his greatest success at the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère , when he was world champion in slalom ahead of French Julien Lizeroux and Canadian Michael Janyk . He also won the Austrian slalom championship for the third time in 2009 . On April 7, 2009, Pillory had to undergo a disc surgery.
In the 2009/10 season , Pranger made three podiums and finished seventh in the Slalom World Cup. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , he was eliminated in the first round. The 2010/11 World Cup season went less well . A fifth place in the first slalom in Levi was his best result of the season, two more times he was among the top ten. In the Slalom World Cup he fell back to 18th place. At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , Pranger came in ninth. He ended the 2010/11 season with his fourth slalom victory at the Austrian Championships . In the 2011/12 season, Pillory improved again compared to the previous year. He finished tenth in the Slalom World Cup with four top 10 placements and another four top 15 results. He also achieved four placements among the top ten in the 2012/13 season .
On May 9, 2014, Pranger announced his retirement from competitive sports. He lives with his wife Karin, whom he married in 2006, and their two children in Gschnitz in Tyrol.
Pranger has been Managing Director of MH Immobilien Invest GmbH since 2018, alongside the Italian ski racer Hannes Paul Schmid .
